HP will no longer be providing support to its recently launched tablet TouchPad and WEBOS-based smartphones i.e the Veer and Pre line of phones. This came through an announcement that HP is discontinuing its WebOS. It further divulged that HP would be sinning off its PC Division and trying to acquire the software company Autonomy.

The TouchPad was released with much fervor and media hype and was thought to be a competitor to iPad 2. But unfortunately that could not happen. TouchPad started off with rather dismal sale figures. Best Buy sold off around 25,000 units, which was less than 10% of its inventory. Resultantly its price had to be slashed by $100.

On the other hand iPad got a warm response from public with one million units being sold in the first 28 days only. So the choice made by users is obviously very clear. Nothing compares with iPad.

While HP is discontinuing WebOS it nevertheless plans to continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward. What those options would be anybody’s guess. But one bet is that HP may start licensing webOS, which it was not interested in doing earlier. But now the situation may change and it may start licensing this OS to other smartphones and thus try and recover back its investment made on WebOS and its supporting devices.
